Digital Login

Less paper, an easier way to start exams, and a modern registration process—for the 2026/27 winter semester, we are introducing digital login for e-exams. With this change, we aim to make the start of exams easier, more convenient, and more in line with the times.

The elimination of paper-based logins naturally brings about a few changes to the procedures leading up to the start of the exam—both for students and for you as exam administrators.

For students, the main change is the process of logging into the exam system: Instead of the login credentials previously provided on paper, they will use their student ID number in the future. After logging in, students are first redirected to a survey that provides all the information previously included on the login slips. By completing the survey, students confirm that they have read and understood the exam conditions and are ready to take the exam. They are then automatically redirected to the actual exam. To give you an idea of exactly what the registration process with the digital login will look like, we will soon be making a self-study module available in the E-Exam ILIAS.

In addition, we recommend that you forgo admission checks and instead verify students’ identities at their seats during the exam. After the exam begins, you can compare the information displayed on the exam computer’s screen with the corresponding student data on the list of participants and on the student ID cards. This allows you to verify that each person has registered for the exam using their own student ID number. To maintain the usual procedure and make it more difficult for students to coordinate with one another before the exam, seats will continue to be assigned and displayed on the monitors outside the e-exam rooms.

With the digital login, you will no longer have to collect and keep signed attendance sheets. Information regarding and confirmation of the exam conditions is provided through the pre-test mentioned above. If you still wish to have students sign a form for your exam, we can provide you with non-personalized information sheets before the exam begins that you can distribute to the students. However, from our legal perspective, such an additional signature is not required.

The elimination of login slips also means that any notes can no longer be attached to them. We will provide plenty of notepaper in the e-exam rooms as usual. Alternatively, you may also bring your own pre-printed notepaper. Please note, however, that we will not be responsible for either printing or distributing these.

In addition to the changes to the procedure at the start of the exam, there will also be a minor change after the exam is over. For archiving purposes, it will no longer be necessary to have a student representative sign the exam summary report. In the future, the signatures of an exam supervisor and a member of the e-exam team will suffice.
