Forest Resilience: Science and Practice

Forest Resilience: Science and Practice connects cutting-edge research with community engagement to better understand forest health and resilience. The project consists of an online seminar series with international experts talking about forest health, climate impacts, and sustainable management, and a forest excursion in Göttingen, where the local community can experience forest research up close. From satellite monitoring to understanding tree physiology, participants will discover how science supports resilient landscapes. The project bridges science and practice and connect knowledge about forest resilience across borders and disciplines, supporting young researchers in particular.

Tree climber vs. sampling drone: a duel for higher forest resilience

Engaging, informative, impactful – this is the type of science communication we envision with our short video documentary Tree climber vs. sampling drone: a duel for higher forest resilience. We follow two doctoral researchers working towards the same goal: making German forests more resilient to climate change. To do so, they need leaf and branch samples from high up in the canopy that provide essential tree health data. One of them climbs trees to collect samples; the other has developed a drone to do the same. They decide to put their methods to the test: Who is faster, safer, more efficient – tree climber or drone? This challenge drives the story while we get to know their research, motivations, and personalities. With stunning visuals and strong storytelling, the film highlights why healthy forests matter to ecosystems and society and how interdisciplinary science can offer new solutions.

Public ring lecture series: „Wald im Wandel – Wälder im Spannungsfeld von Klimawandel und gesellschaftlichen Anforderungen“

In the winter semester 25/26, we will host the public ring lecture series of the University of Göttingen „Wald im Wandel – Wälder im Spannungsfeld von Klimawandel und gesellschaftlichen Anforderungen.“ The series explores forest resilience to climate impacts, combining scientific, social, and artistic perspectives. Highlights include a performance by the University of Göttingen Chamber Choir presenting “Un bois hors du monde – Musical Walks through the Impressionist Enchanted Forest,” and a dialogue between science and poetry with Barbara Greese and Christian Ammer. This unique blend of music, literature, and science fosters interdisciplinary exchange, offering fresh insights into the challenges and opportunities facing our forests today.
