Supermarkets, Drugstores and Shopping malls

Food
Supermarkets: Many of the large supermarket chains have stores throughout the city offer cheap and good quality products. Discount stores are e.g. Aldi, Lidl, Penny and Netto. Supermarket chains such as Edeka, Real, Rewe and Tegut are also widespread. These chains usually have a deli counter for fresh meats, cheeses, fish etc. and also have speciality lines, for example, delicatessen items, international foods, and organic produce.
In addition, there are several shops in the city center which offer organically-grown food and produce (Reformhaus, Naturkostladen, Alnatura). Ethnic shops with food and other items from countrys around the world are widespread e.g. Asian, African, Arab or Turkish shops.
The farmers around Göttingen sell their products at weekly markets (Wochenmärkte). Fresh fruits, vegetables, flowers, bread, meat and cheese are available and, while mostly a little more expensive than in a supermarket, the quality is usually very high.

Drugstores
There are several drugstores in the city center which offer cosmetic and household products at reasonable prices. Please note that you cannot buy painkillers or any other medical products at the drugstores, as these are only available over the counter in the pharmacies (Apotheke).

Shopping malls
There is a shopping mall near the motorway exit in Grone, called „Kaufpark“ and another shopping center in Weende at the „Große Breite“. In the city you can find two large department stores "Karstadt" at the Groner Straße and the "Carré" at the Weender Landstraße.

Opening times
The food stores in the city are usually open from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Some shops close at 4 or 6 a.m on Saturdays. On Sundays the most shops are normally closed. Gas/petrol stations, the train station and some kiosks have a licence to trade after 10 p.m. and on Sundays. However, the prices are often higher than in a normal store.
