How do I register for a final thesis?

Almost finished with your studies and now "only" the Bachelor's or Master's thesis is missing? What do you have to do?

Find a topic and apply to professorships

Our Chairs publish topics or subject areas for theses as well as information on the application procedure for a place to write the thesis on their websites (section "Teaching"/"Course Offerings").

Department of Business Administration: Bachelor's theses

From the winter semester of 2025/2026 onwards, all supervision places for bachelor's theses at the business administration, business informatics and business education professorships will be allocated via a central procedure (exceptions: bachelor's theses with Prof. Dr. Matthias Schumann - if you are interested in this option, please contact the Chair directly).

Applications for supervision places will no longer be submitted to individual professors, but only via the central procedure.

Students of business and human resource education who wish to write their bachelor's thesis in their minor subject should continue to apply directly to the relevant professors as usual.

Detailed information, the application form and respective application periods can be found here.

Department of Business Administration: Master's theses

There is no central procedure. Information on the application process, including application deadlines and potential topics, can be found on the individual professors' websites in the 'Teaching' or 'Course offerings' section. You should apply directly to the contact person responsible for your chosen topic for a place to write your thesis. You can do this using an application form or via email, for example.

Department of Economics: Bachelor's and Master's theses

The Department of Economics (economics professorships including the Chairs of Statistics and Econometrics, the Chair of Spatial Data Analysis and Statistical Learning Methods as well as the Chair of Economic and Social History) does not have a centralised application process or application periods. Please check the application deadlines directly with your supervisor at the relevant Chair. Information on topics, the application and selection process, etc. is published by the individual professorships on their websites in the 'Teaching' or 'Course offerings' section.

Registration of the thesis at the examination office of the faculty

Your supervisor at the Chair registers the thesis at the examination office of the faculty. You cannot register for the Bachelor's or Master's thesis in FlexNow on your own.

The following information must be included in the email of the supervisor for the thesis registration:

  1. matriculation number

  2. surname, first name student

  3. topic/title of the thesis (German and English)

  4. start date (exact date)

  5. name of first supervisor

  6. name of second supervisor

  7. information whether the thesis is an external thesis, which is written in cooperation with a company or an external institution. ("External thesis" means e.g. a thesis within the framework of an activity within a company, or within the framework of a thesis with the involvement of the company (e.g. by conducting and evaluating an employee survey). A contractual agreement is not necessary.").

The supervisors send the email with the registration for the thesis exclusively to the examination office. If the registration is sent to the examination office and the students at the same time, the thesis will be registered directly and the specified start date will not be taken into account.

Submission of the thesis

Please note the information on final theses on the website of the Examination Office.

The Examination Office will inform your supervisor about the exact submission date in an automatic email as soon as the Examination Office staff has registered or entered the thesis in FlexNow. The submission date is then visible for you in FlexNow.

Please note that you still only need to submit your thesis digitally as a PDF file via FlexNow. You do not have to submit printed versions of it to the examination office or the Chair’s office. You can upload your work until 23:59 on the day of submission.

If you have problems uploading your thesis, please send it to the examination office by the deadline, not to your supervisor.

Good luck for your theses!
