Major Research Interests
The main focus of the group is to study cytology, structure/function relationships and biodiversity in interactions between microbes and their environment. Presently we are particularly interested in prokaryotes living in symbiosis with marine bivalves, interactions between filamentous fungi and microbial biofilms attached to hard rock substrata. With these projects we will contribute to an understanding of the role of microorganisms in some geochemical processes, such as formation and dissolution of minerals, chemolithotrophy in marine ecosystems and microbial biodiversity in extreme habitats. Besides standard techniques for bioanalytics and molecular biology, we use (analytical) electron microscopy in conjunction with light microscopic techniques as important tools.
