New Recommendation Published: Treatment and Support for Adults at the End of Life in Intensive Care
The two-part recommendation “Treatment and Support for Adults at the End of Life in Intensive Care” has been published in the journal Anaesthesiologie.
The recommendations were developed by the Ethics Section of the German Interdisciplinary Association for Intensive and Emergency Medicine (DIVI) in cooperation with the German Society for Palliative Medicine.
The first part addresses the fundamental ethical, communicative, and structural aspects to be considered in supporting critically ill and dying patients in intensive care units. The second part focuses on concrete recommendations regarding therapeutic measures and end-of-life care. These include, among others, approaches to the discontinuation of life-sustaining treatments, symptom relief, psychosocial and spiritual support, as well as interprofessional collaboration.
With this recommendation, both the importance of a reflective professional attitude and practical approaches for clinical implementation are highlighted. The aim is to strengthen the quality of treatment and support for patients in their final phase of life while providing the best possible assistance to relatives and the healthcare team.
