Göttingen, 27.11.25: Since this winter semester, we offer Career Talks with female role models after each female seminar speaker. In a safe and informal setting, female Early Career Researchers can ask questions about career opportunities in academia.
Siegfried R. Waldvogel receives prestigious Wöhler Award for Sustainable Chemistry
Karlsruhe, 29.09.25: Prof. Siegfried R. Waldvogel, Director at the Max Planck Institute for Chemical Energy Conversion, and PI at CRC 1633, has been awarded the prestigious Wöhler-Award for Sustainable Chemistry at the Science Forum Chemistry (SFC). This award recognizes his outstanding and forward-thinking achievements in the field of electrosynthesis, enabling the environmentally friendly and economically viable production of organic compounds. With over 25 years of experience, Professor Waldvogel has significantly shaped the field of electrosynthesis, developing holistic technological approaches that span from academic research to industrial application. His dedication has been instrumental in driving the sustainable transformation of synthesis processes. In many examples, the solvent control in electrosynthesis and PCET were keys for success allowing novel avenues to translate this technology onto technically relevant and cutting edge applications.

ICASEC Summer School

Göttingen, 12.-16.10.25: The International Center for Advanced Studies of Energy Conversion (ICASEC) holds a conference on "State of the Art Methods in Surface Dynamics", organized by Oliver Bünermann (Univ. of Göttingen) and Tim Schäfer (CRC 1633).
The mission of ICASEC is to bring together a broad range of scientists and address fundamental problems of energy conversion in research and teaching. For this purpose, the annual Summer School provides a discussion platform for international postdocs and students with 8 leading experts. This year state-of-the art methods for surface dynamics are in the focus of the Summer School. Dynamics at surfaces is the field where atomic-scale understanding emerges concerning the elementary events important to interfacial energy transfer and surface chemistry. Experiments are performed on well-defined model systems under ultra-high vacuum conditions to allow a straightforward comparison to theory. This approach unravels the mechanisms of elementary surface processes and reactions down to the atomic and quantum scale revealing ways to control surface reactions and improve heterogeneous catalysts in the future.

PI Strategy Meeting 2025

Fulda, 15.-16.09.25: At the 2025 PI Strategy Meeting CRC 1633 PIs briefly presented the status of their projects before engaging in discussions on methods (Synthesis and Catalysis, Analytical Methods, Theoretical Modelling) and concepts (PCET Elementary Steps, Muli-PCET Reactions, Environmental Effects), in order to determine the future direction of the CRC.
Poster Prize for Vivian Keune

Erlangen, 17.-19.09.25: Vivian Keune from CRC 1633 Public Outreach Project (Ö01) received a Poster Prize at the GdCh-FGCU Conference for his poster “Vom Schadstoff zum Rohstoff – Elektrochemische Reduktion von Nitrat zu Ammoniak”
Tsinghua & Göttingen Bilateral Symposium - 清华大学与哥廷根大学双边研讨会

Göttingen, 29.-30.07.25: A delegation from the renowned Tsinghua University in Beijing visited Göttingen to discuss opportunities for cooperation in research and teaching. Both Universities and CRC 1633 presented their up-to-date research on Bioorganic Chemistry, Synthesis & Catalysis, Materials, Mechanisms & Catalysis.
Summer Barbecue 2025

Göttingen, 17.07.25: After the seminar of Prof. Dr. Ingrid Span on "Hydrogenases made crystal clear", we had an "End of Semester Summer Barbecue" in the Garden of the Faculty of Physics.
"Effective Science Communication – online and offline"

Gießen, 07.03.25:‘Effective Science Communication – online and offline’ was presented by Axel Langer (JLU Giessen). Organised by CRC 1633, the science communication workshop provided practical strategies for communicating scientific content clearly and concisely to a non-academic audience. Various communication channels were covered, including digital media, social media, presentations and direct conversations, for example at trade fairs or public events. The aim was to support researchers in presenting their work in a comprehensible and effective manner. The interactive workshop combined theoretical principles with practical exercises and discussion rounds.
New PI and new Project: Welcome Katharina Kaiser and C06!
Göttingen, 01.07.25: As of July 2025, SFB 1633 will have a new subproject: Under the direction of Prof. Dr. Katharina Kaiser, C06 will investigate ‘’Controlling photoinduced PCET and PCEnT with sub-molecular precision". This project will look at how molecules move both charge and energy when excited by light, and how these processes are influenced by their structure and surroundings. Using high-resolution scanning probe microscopy combined with tip-enhanced optical spectroscopy, it explores excited-state PCET reactions at the atomic scale, focussing on how vibronic transitions and local electric fields can steer the outcome of such reactions. The experiments aim to uncover how specific molecular arrangements favor one pathway over another.Retreat 2025

Ilsenburg, 11.-13.02.25: For the first CRC 1633 Retreat, the whole CRC consortium came together in the beautiful, snow-covered monastery "Kloster Drübeck" at the foot of the Harz Mountains. For two days of getting-to-know each other better, presenting the latest status of the projects and shaping the further research cooperation. Lectures on the projects were accompanied by poster presentations.
